Membership

Membership of the Association has grown steadily since its inception. It has members in almost every local authority in England, Scotland and Wales and has members from the Northern Ireland Electoral Office, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. There are also members who are permanently resident overseas. Most local authorities have multiple members. Full Members are from every level of local government from junior officers with very little electoral experience to senior managers with extensive experience. The total number of Members currently exceeds 1600.

The Association has three types of membership.

Full Membership is available to persons who are employed by a local authority and whose work involves the administration of elections or electoral registration.

Past Service Membership is available for persons who have been members of the Association and who have retired or left the service and for those whose former employment would have entitled them to Full Membership, but who are no longer employed in either a full- or part-time capacity.

Affiliate Membership is available for any person who is interested in the conduct of elections and/or electoral registration and related matters and for whom there is no other class of membership available.

In addition the Association has granted Honorary Membership to a number of persons in recognition of the service they have given to the Association.

Benefits of Membership

One of the great advantages of Membership is networking with other administrators nationwide; this can take place via everyday communication by telephone or e-mail but the following are very important and extremely beneficial ways of connecting with colleagues and keeping up to date with news and information relevant to an administrator’s day to day work:-

  • Attendance at Annual Seminars and Conferences
  • Attendance at any of the many training courses available
  • Attendance at Branch meetings
  • The Association's quarterly magazine, ARENA
  • The weekly newsletter sent out by the Website Manager
  • The Association's website

E-mail has become the normal option for contacting Members, and you will receive various kinds of information about Association activities electronically. Please make sure you let the Membership Team know (0191 561 1144 or e-mail membershipteam@aea-elections.co.uk) if you change any of your details so you don't miss out. You will also receive a weekly email update from the Association's Website Manager with a link to the weekly newsletter which gives details on current and upcoming AEA matters and activities, current electoral matters and job vacancies in the electoral field.

Would potential new applicants for Membership please note that the Membership year is the 1st October to the 30th September and, irrespective of the date during the year when a person joins the Association, their Membership will lapse on the 30th September and will need to be renewed from the 1st October on payment of the fee current at that time.
