Statement on the Elections Bill and independence of the Electoral Commission

With the Elections Bill now moving through Committee stage in the House of Lords, we restate our continued and firm support for the ongoing independence of the Electoral Commission.

It is essential the Commission is able to take a non-partisan approach to the democratic process, particularly in the guidance and support it provides to our members, electors, candidates and political parties.

As its own commissioners have recently stated, the Commission’s independence is fundamental to maintaining confidence and legitimacy in our electoral system.
