Statement on Electoral Commission Reports on May 2021 elections

We welcome today’s three reports, which again highlight that the majority of electors and candidates are confident the May 2021 elections were well run. This was achieved by the professionalism of the entire electoral community working hard and working together under incredibly trying circumstances.

We wholeheartedly support the report’s recommendations, particularly the need to build resilience and capacity for electoral administration.

The “outdated and increasingly complex electoral law framework” cited is an issue we have repeatedly raised. We continue to call for a single Electoral Administration Act as outlined in our recently published Blueprint for a Modern Electoral Landscape

We welcome the intent to establish a programme of activity to gather evidence about the challenges facing electoral administration teams and identify solutions to address them. We are ready to do whatever we can to support this, for the benefit of everyone who votes, stands in and runs elections.
