The Job

We are looking for an enthusiastic and ambitious person to join our Democratic and Elections Team. You will join a professional, friendly, dynamic and busy team at the heart of the Council’s democratic and decision making process, working with senior officers and district Councillors to help shape local democracy.

This is an interesting and varied role. You will be responsible for your own portfolio of Committees, ensuring the political decision-making processes are met, as well as playing a key role in delivering the district’s electoral registration requirements and annual elections. You will also assist with scrutiny reviews, support Elected Members, and provide advice to Officers, Elected Members and members of the public. You would be joining us at an exciting and interesting time with changes arising from the Elections Act coming into force.

The organisation offers agile working, however you will need to be office based to support your committee meetings, and during the election and canvass periods.

The person

With a successful track record in supporting the local government decision making process and/or experience of working in electoral services, you will be ready for a new challenge in local government and want to make a real difference.

You must have an eye for detail, be well organised and able to think logically. You will produce work of a high standard while under pressure to meet statutory deadlines and competing priorities, and will have the ability to plan and prioritise your own workload, using your initiative to work independently or as part of a team.

A working knowledge of the committee management system and/or Xpress Elections Management system would be an advantage.

The Benefits

Cherwell District Council is a great place to work. The Council is an equal opportunities employer and has flexible working practices.

  • A generous annual leave entitlement
  • Opportunity to join the Local Government Pension Scheme
  • Cycle to work scheme (after one years’ service)
  • Incremental pay award (awarded annually in April after one years’ service)
