How to join the AEA
Membership
Membership of the Association has grown steadily since its inception. It has members in almost every local authority in England, Scotland and Wales and has members from the Northern Ireland Electoral Office and the Channel Islands and Isle of Man. There are, in fact, currently two members who are permanently resident overseas (in Guyana and Spain). Most local authorities have multiple members. Full Members are from every level of local government from junior officers, with very little electoral experience to senior managers with extensive experience. The total number of Members currently exceeds 1600.
The Association has three types of membership.
Full Membership is available to persons who are employed by a local authority and whose work involves the administration of elections or electoral registration.
Past Service Membership is available for persons who have been members of the Association and who have retired or left the service and for those whose former employment would have entitled them to Full Membership, but who are no longer employed in either a full- or part-time capacity.
Affiliate Membership is available for any person who is interested in the conduct of elections and/or electoral registration and related matters and for whom there is no other class of membership available.
In addition the Association has granted Honorary Membership to a number of members in recognition of the service they have given to the Association.
The Membership year is the 1st October to the 30th September and, irrespective of the date when a person joins the Association, their Membership will lapse on the 30th September.
